Dream Coracles Video

The nursery has recently starred in a DVD that was produced by Siren Films www.sirenfilms.co.uk on behalf of Community Playthings (the makers of our wooden furniture and fittings in nursery) www.communityplaythings.co.uk

Community Playthings have designed a 'coracle' for the baby room children and they were keen to film how the children and staff use the 'coracle'.

Dream CoracleA 'coracle' is a special place for a child to crawl into, a secure place to play or curl up to sleep. Early years experts told us that crawling babies should not be confined in cots, but have freedom to choose when to sleep or rest. Their design team perceived the need for a sleep option that babies can access themselves - something that still gives the child (and parent) a sense of protection. A firm boundary gives babies a feeling of security. Imagine a cosy sleep space with the encircling sense of mother's arms for a baby to crawl into.

Many Dream Coracles are now in nurseries across the country, but as they are a new concept Community Playthings heard people say, "I want to see them in a nursery."

So, in January Siren Films spent time at Northumbria University Nursery. Siren filmed the under-twos using Coracles and interviewed staff and parents.

Watching the film, what strikes you is the way children made the Dream Coracles their own. Nobody needed to tell them what Coracles were for or that they could climb out themselves when nap time was over.
